Now that the smoke has cleared...

Despite Friday's extra panel, I actually really enjoy reading people's theories about the comic. In this case, it was just amusing how quickly some of you guessed the truth. I can't remember whether I knew Mr. Jones was future Iz from the very first second I dreamed him up (he may have started out in my imagination simply as "Iz's mysterious new boss, who clearly has something to do with the time travel"), but I made the decision pretty early on. There have certainly been clues. But some of you figured it out pretty much immediately.

In an age in which feedback is immediate and people can publish their theories just as widely as I can publish a given comic simply by leaving a comment on the relevant page, it may be tempting to react to correct fan theories by swerving wildly in a different direction. I know some people do this, but I prefer not to. You've all come up with just as many wildly inventive wrong theories (some of which I wish I'd thought of) as you have right ones, and so you should. Theorise away. And those of you who have expected the current revelations can raise your iced tea (yes) in celebration.

Panel 1: In October of 2022, over in Universe A, Iz A is talking to Mr. Jones via Zoom. We see the Zoom screen, with Mr. Jones on the left and Iz A on the right. They are the same person, in the same location, though Mr. Jones is considerably older than Iz A.

Iz A: Your voice...just changed...

Mr. Jones: I was using a modulator.

Panel 2:

Iz A: You...can't be...It doesn't make...

Mr. Jones: No, I'm literally you in thirty years.

Panel 3:

Iz A: I...you act like a supervillain!

Mr. Jones: Not really. I just did that because I knew it would intrigue you.

Panel 4:

Mr. Jones: Okay, Iz, I know you're panicking. Deep breaths. Deeeep breaths.

Iz A: There isn't any air!

Alt-Text: Acting like a supervillain because he knows it will intrigue his past self seems like the kind of decision Iz would make while panicking, then stick to because he'd taken it too far.
